Every dog likes to run around on a lawn or in a meadow. Sniffing , hunting and playing, there is so much to discover. But how does it look if the master has fertilized the lawn shortly before. Can the fertilizer pearls be toxic to dogs?
In this article we get to the bottom of this question. We will show you the difference between mineral and organic fertilizers and lawn fertilizers with weed killers or castor meal.
Organic or mineral fertilizing?
If you own a garden, you want everything to sprout, flourish and the garden to look pretty. In order for a lawn to be lush green and grow well, there is no avoiding occasional fertilization.
So that the lawn is optimally cared for, you should fertilize extensively about three to four times a year. However, a distinction must always be made between which lawn fertilizer is used.
A general distinction is made between these lawn fertilizers:
- Mineral fertilizers
Avoid using mineral fertilizers such as blue grain because the ammonia compounds, phosphates and nitrates they contain are toxic to dogs.
- Organic fertilizers
There are organic fertilizers and organic products that are safe for dogs. Some manufacturers advertise that pets and children can step back on the grass immediately.
Special fertilizers with active ingredients against weeds and moss
Dogs should not step on the lawn if weed killers and herbicides have been spread.
Mineral fertilizers can be dangerous
Mineral lawn fertilizers should be used with the utmost caution in dog households.
Never let your dog play on the lawn immediately after fertilizing, but water the grass thoroughly beforehand. In dry weather, 20 to 30 minutes of irrigation is ideal.
This is not only good for your dog, but also for the lawn.
By watering, the fertilizer pellets are flushed directly onto the sward. This makes it difficult for the dog to pick it up and the lawn can then be used as usual again.
What to do if the dog has eaten manure
If the dog is not watered, the dog can ingest grains while playing and there can be unpleasant side effects. In addition, the pellets can burn the grass and it will turn yellow and brown.
In the case of long-term fertilizers, it is advisable to work them directly into the soil. In this case, the pellets will not immediately dissolve through the water. If your dog has consumed the lawn fertilizer or the pellets, poisoning cannot be ruled out. Symptoms of this are vomiting, salivation, cramps and staggering.
Depending on the amount of fertilizer eaten, life-threatening conditions can arise. So if you notice any abnormalities in your dog, see the veterinarian immediately. Always keep lawn manure out of the reach of animals, and the same applies to children.
Organic lawn fertilizer is harmless
The use of organic fertilizers is safer and more recommendable in dog households. They are harmless to humans and animals. These fertilizers are of purely natural origin and must not contain any chemical substances.
Organic fertilizers are applied and take some time to take effect. The reason for this is that the soil must first absorb and decompose the nutrients. When using organic lawn fertilizers it is not absolutely necessary to water. Nevertheless, it is advisable. On the one hand, the effect is accelerated and, on the other hand, the dog can play on it again without worries.
Be careful with fertilizers with weed killers
There is a specialty with lawn fertilizers that are enriched with weed killers. So that the herbicide can work, the lawn should be watered beforehand. Only then is the fertilizer applied.
The fertilizer should now be able to work for a day or two. And then it is again extensively watered.
However, nobody should walk on the lawn while it is taking effect. Greater caution is required with these agents. These agents can be dangerous for animals.
As a dog owner, it is better not to use such agents.
Use fertilizer without ricin
In recent years there have been some known cases of dog poisoning from castor meal in lawn manure. Ricin is a powerful poison that is contained in the seed coats of the miracle tree. The poison is fatal to both animals and humans, even in small quantities . No antidote is known.
Castor meal is very effective as an organic fertilizer and is therefore included in some lawn fertilizers. If the castor meal is heated very high during production, the agent is harmless.
Unfortunately, in a few cases this has not happened sufficiently in the past. Since these incidents, some companies have completely stopped adding castor meal.
This is probably why lawn fertilizers don’t have the best reputation. Headlines are also known about animals that suffered from poisoning from lawn fertilizers.
Organic lawn fertilizer as an alternative
If you too want to be on the safe side, choose fertilizers that are of organic origin and do not contain ricin. Then the dog and the lawn are fine.
These organic fertilizers are specifically sold “suitable for pets”:
